Description of duties:
This position will lead regional and statewide implementation activities for Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative (http://www.myfwc.com/wildlifelegacy). This position will be primarily responsible for implementing the Initiative’s data gaps and terrestrial goals and objectives. The Initiative is a long-term, strategic conservation program developed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission that encompasses conservation of all of Florida’s fish and wildlife using a habitat based approach. The Initiative is a non-regulatory, partnership driven program designed to facilitate conservation activities using a statewide planning framework.
This position supports the Initiative through three fundamental areas:
1. Florida’s State Wildlife Action Plan – This person is responsible for coordinating and generating cooperative conservation projects that address high priority issues identified in Florida’s State Wildlife Action Plan and emerging conservation issues. This position also assists in monitoring implementation activities and revising the plan according to federal guidance.
2. State Wildlife Grants – This position supports the State Wildlife Grant program by communicating programmatic goals to potential grantees, assisting in developing grant proposals, and in administering grants. This responsibility also includes supporting program development by creating processes for grant review, leveraging funds outside of SWG, completing administrative requirements and monitoring funded projects.
3. Partnerships – This person coordinates closely with other fish and wildlife professionals and stakeholders, both internal and external to the Commission to advance programmatic goals and objectives. This work involves developing substantive partnerships designed to enhance and leverage conservation opportunities where shared priorities occur.
Duties
To further advance the goals of the Initiative, duties of the position could include:
• Serve as a team leader and team member to achieve goals within the Initiative program with little to no day-to-day supervision. This position will be primarily responsible for implementing the Initiative’s data gaps and terrestrial goals and objectives.
• Coordinate and develop priority projects through broad-based partner support that are designed to accomplish programmatic goals.
• Lead teams through the conservation planning and prioritization process by identifying appropriate partners, facilitating project development, and assist in securing resources to achieve goals.
• Project management including grant writing, contract management, budget management and reporting.
• Programmatic outreach through presentations, written communication including scientific and popular publication and website updates.
• Represent the Initiative by serving on internal and external technical and advisory teams.
• Provide technical and other assistance for wildlife research and monitoring, conservation coordination, and management projects.
• Although this is not a field position, there are opportunities for assisting with research and monitoring projects.
• Occasional overnight travel associated with agency mission critical guidelines. This includes travel to conferences, meetings, training and other relevant activities.
• Complete administrative duties such as vehicle reporting, purchase tracking, and travel forms in a timely manner.
• Assist with adaptively managing the Initiative by monitoring programmatic activities and providing recommendations to adjust processes and products to better align with goals.
• Participate in immediate resolutions for short-term and unexpected problems as they arise.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position:
• Performance of these duties requires that the employee possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or a natural resource conservation related field.
• Preference will be give to applicants with a broad species-based background, and/or a strong terrestrial ecology background. Familiarity with upland systems and fire ecology a plus.
• This position requires strong abilities to work in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently to accomplish the goals of a team.
• The employee must possess strong skills in leadership, partnership development and maintenance, administration, and organization including time and information management.
• This position requires strong abilities to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, and in promoting interpersonal relationships.
• The employee must be experienced in the use of computers for word processing, information management, communications, and data management (ex. Microsoft suite).
• The position requires strong abilities in project management, including managing budgets, contracts and grant agreements
• The employee must be able to apply technical and scientific knowledge to development and implementation of projects and issues; analyze, interpret, and explain complex technical issues regarding wildlife conservation activities; and interpret operational needs and develop integrated creative solutions.
• The employee must be able to formulate coherent, effective policies and procedures and to incorporate biological, administrative, ethical, social, and political considerations in formulation of those policies and procedures.
• The employee must be skilled at determining work priorities, eliciting cooperation as necessary to achieve objectives, and ensures proper completion of work assignments and program activities.
