Who You’ll Work With

The Forest Economist is a full-time position ideally based in Athens, Georgia. The role supports Forisk’s research program through generating industry research and projections, improving and maintaining Forisk’s price forecast models, delivering Forisk research to subscribing clients, and supporting Forisk educational events. Forisk works as a team of collaborative researchers that cover areas of overlapping forest industry expertise to support Forisk’s analysis and clients.

 

The Forest Economist reports to the VP of Research and (1) leads and conducts research in several areas relevant to Forisk’s coverage; (2) leads the improvement of internal models and analysis relevant to Forisk consulting and research; and (3) supports Forisk clients through educational programs, advisory calls, and conference presentations.

 

 

Job Description / Expected Outcomes

The Forest Economist reports to the VP of Research and also directly supports the Client Services team. This is a full-time position based in Athens, Georgia. Primary responsibilities include:

 Conduct research in several areas relevant to Forisk’s research portfolio.

o To include, at a minimum, tracking housing and the general macroeconomy, timber and log prices by region across North America, and forest industry trade policies.

 Support the improvement of internal price forecasting models and frameworks.

o Conduct research and analysis to evaluate and improve price forecast model drivers, including elasticities.

 Support clients and consulting projects, as directed by the VP of Client Services.

o Support delivery of forecast results and Forisk Research Quarterly (FRQ) research to clients.

o Evaluate forecast models and provide guidance on results for clients and Forisk research.

 Support development efforts that raise the awareness of Forisk’s research subscriptions.

o Draft and publish quarterly blog posts and periodic trade articles.

o Deliver presentations at forest industry events or Forisk workshops.

 

In addition, the Forest Economist role includes internal and external training and education, as well as opportunities for independent projects, service, and advancement.

 

 

 

Qualifications:

2. Analytic skills, including experience with evaluating data sets and modeling results;

4. Time management skills and strong propensity for planning ahead for publication cycles and interim deadlines.

5. Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate research across the Forisk team.

6. Good listener; able to discern the true issues and objectives;

8. Forestry or natural resource background (preferred);

9. Care about others (team first);

10. Committed to communicating openly and to acting with integrity;

11. Communication skills for interacting with clients and colleagues, and for delivering presentations to clients or at industry events;

12. A good sense of humor.

 

 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will have, at a minimum:

 Master’s degree in forestry/forest economics/finance;

o PhD in natural resource or forest economics preferred.

 Direct experience in forestry, natural resource modeling, research and/or market analysis;

 At least 5 years of direct experience with forest economic research and/or timber finance and valuation and/or natural resource modeling.

 Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Power BI; and a

 Proven track record of success, based on prior work experience, achievements, references and/or research.
