Position: Assistant Professor in Aquatic Ecology

Description: This is a 10 month tenure-track position with teaching, advising, research, and service responsibilities. The contract is 60% teaching and 40% research and summer salary support will be provided for the first three years of employment. Candidates should have a strong research background in stream ecology, with an emphasis in conservation biology of fishes and/or landscape ecology. The successful candidate should be able to contribute to an applied research program but also obtain competitive funding to address basic ecological questions.

Principal Duties: Teach approximately 1.5 courses/semester that include Ichthyology and Environmental Conservation (alternate years) and develop a graduate course in area of specialty. Participate in team-taught courses that include Introduction to Wildlife and Fisheries, Integrated Natural Resources Management, and Wildlife and Fisheries Techniques. Periodically teach Seminars, Special Topics, and Special Problems as needed. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Obtain and administer outside grant and contract research funding, including support for graduate students. Participate in University, College, and Department governance and service; participate in professional service and outreach activities.

Qualifications: Required: Completed Ph.D. in aquatic ecology, fisheries science or closely related area by application deadline. Demonstrated record of research and scholarly activity. Appropriate oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Desired: Knowledge of stream fish ecology and community/landscape ecology of riverine systems. Teaching experience, experience in grant writing, involvement in professional society activities, and spatial analysis and modeling desired. Demonstrated collaboration with natural resource agencies. Computer and technology skills as they relate to teaching, research, and service. Experience working with diverse groups or cultures.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.

Starting Date: August 1, 2008.

University/Department: South Dakota State University is a Land-Grant institution with approximately 11,000 students. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences is in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, and has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs. There are currently about 270 undergraduate and 65 graduate majors in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. The Department houses the USGS South Dakota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. There will be nine faculty in the Department, including Cooperative Research Unit personnel, when this position is filled (http://wfs.sdstate.edu).
