Employer: University of Oxford
Description:Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Tropical Carbon Dynamics
Junior Research Fellowship in Tropical Forest Science
Grade 7.1 to 7.3. Salary £26,666 - £28,289pa
Applications are invited for a four-year post-doctoral research associate position to work on implementing studies of carbon allocation and cycling at forest sites across the Amazon and Andes region. The work is funded by the Gordon and Berry Moore Foundation, as part of a large grant to the RAINFOR project (www.rainfor.org) to investigate the carbon stocks and cycling of the Amazon forest. The position will be based at the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford, and is associated with a Junior Research Fellowship in Tropical Forest Science at Oriel College, Oxford. It will involve close collaboration with partners in the University of Leeds, and across South America.
The research position will involve conducting long-term studies of above- and below-ground productivity, autotrophic respiration and microclimate at six sites across the Amazon Basin (in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil). The researcher will train, mentor and supervise seven South American students who will conduct the routine data collection at these sites, and conduct occasional visits to the field sites to trouble-shoot problems and pursue particular scientific questions. The researcher will also routinely collate and quality-control the field data, and maintain frequent contact with the field researchers.
The successful candidate would be required to have a PhD in an environmental science with experience of tropical field work involving ecophysiological or carbon dynamics measurements, proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese, and either have or develop an understanding of forest carbon cycling. You will need to be a patient mentor and supervisor, organised in the collation and quality control of field data, and technically competent in trouble-shooting problems in field instrumentation. You will also need to maintain an active research agenda, publish in the scientific literature and produce regular reports on project progress and be able to work well in an interdisciplinary team spread across several universities.
The post would start in May 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter, and run for four years.
