Position: Part-time hourly-paid Technician I. The position is stationed at the WRD Fisheries Region Five Office (2024 Newton Rd. Albany, GA).
Primary duties: Intern will work closely with Dr. Kaeser, a staff Fisheries Biologist, to collect physical and biological data on the association of stream fishes and habitat. Intern will gain valuable experience conducting electrofishing and snorkeling surveys and/or radiotelemetry and tracking of fish in addition to scientific research design and execution. Intern will assist with the quantification of stream habitat features (large woody debris and substrate) via field surveys and the preparation and interpretation of sonar habitat maps using computer applications (eg. GIS). Other duties include the use of hand-held GPS devices and the operation of small boats, and may include data entry and maintaining and repairing field
equipment.
Period of Employment: Approximately May 15, 2008 - August 1, 2008 (based on summer semester term).

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Intern must possess a valid driver’s license, must be a proficient swimmer and comfortable working in and under the water on a daily basis where encounters with snakes, alligators, etc. are possible. Intern should be in good physical condition and able to endure outdoor work during hot and humid weather. Intern must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs for short distances and have some knowledge of basic stream ecology. Intern should be comfortable performing some computer-based work assignments, and able to conform to state uniform guidelines (uniform is provided). Preferred Qualifications: Snorkeling experience and/or a valid diving certification, operating small motorboats, identification of warmwater fish, and proficient in CPR and first aid preferred. Preference may be given to individuals that have completed course work in fisheries, and have a strong academic record (a minimum of 3.0 GPA).
