Duty Location: Carters Project Office, Chatsworth, GA

Area of Consideration: Students Definition of Student: An individual who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student and is taking at least a half-time academic/vocational/or technical course load in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

This is a TEMPORARY SUMMER HIRE POSITION LASTING UP TO 120 DAYS. Employment dates are from approximately MAY through SEPTEMBER. Actual length of employment is contingent upon budget, workload, and weather.

DUTIES: GS-03: Operates an entrance control station at a public recreation area where an entrance fee is charges. Checks to determine that individuals entering the area by vehicle or other means have the necessary entrance permit. Furnishes and explains to visitors the rules and regulations pertaining to use of the area by the public. Inspects public recreation areas and facilities to detect and report needed repairs or maintenance. Inspects the project area and facilities to detect, prevent when possible, and /or report unauthorized entry and use, vandalism, theft, uncontrolled fires, hazards to public safety, etc. May also operate a motor vehicle and 2-way radio equipment in connection with the above duties.
FOR GS-04: Serves as a Park Ranger performing technical support work in connection with the functions of the Resource Office. Duties such as patrol of the area, furnishing information to visitors, reading gauges are performed to the full extent after a period of instruction and review. Passes out boating regulations and other water safety literature. Assists in showing of water safety films at schools, civic clubs, and other public gatherings throughout the surrounding counties. Receives and reports oral complaints regarding service facilities and, if possible, explains reasons. Furnishes information to visitors, such as the identification of interesting facts about the flora, fauna, and geological and historical feature of assigned area; furnishes information regarding roads, trails, accommodations, programs, etc.; suggest trips and ways to utilize time to observe and enjoy the area; and gives informal talks before groups of visitors.

Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS: For GS-03: Applicants must have six months of general experience and three months specialized experience. For GS-04: Applicants must have six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience such as: Park Guide or Tour Leader law enforcement or investigative work forestry and fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation or management of park areas or similar operations. OR For GS-03: One year of education above high school with 6 semester hours of related course work. For GS-04: Two years of education above high school with 12 semester hours of related course work. Major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. CONDITIONS OF STUDENT EMPLOYMENT UNDER THE STUDENT TEMPORARY EXPERIENCE PROGRAM: -Written agreement between agency, school and student not required -Work schedule may be part-time or full-time as long as work does not interfere with success in school -Classification series and grade set according to the OPM classification standard -Participants have no non-competitive right to conversion to TERM or permanent employment. -Participants may be converted to the Career Experience Program, if all requirements are met. -Students must have a minimum 2.0 quarterly/semester GPA and 2.0 cumulative GPA.
