Temporary Hourly Environmental Technician Positions

(Ambient Monitoring Unit, Facilities Monitoring Unit, Intensive Surveys Unit)

The Watershed Planning and Monitoring Program (WPMP) is accepting applications for Fulltime Temporary Hourly Environmental Technician positions. Pay rate is $9.50/hour with no benefits offered. Position is classified as temporary, however, position can be occupied as long as individual is able to work.

Although an interest in biology or other sciences may be helpful, the most important qualification for these positions is an interest in doing a variety of office, laboratory and field work as outlined below.

A. Assists in the collection and processing of samples.

1. Assists in the collection of rivers/streams/lakes and wastewater treatment facility

samples.

2. Assists in the collection of macroinvertebrate aquatic life samples.

3. Delivers samples to appropriate laboratory for analyses.
4. Assists with sorting macroinvertebrates in laboratory and makes preliminary identifications after training has been provided.

5. Assists in other analyses and sampling, such as chlorophyll, algal growth potential test

and others.

B. Assists in management of water quality data.

1. Does preliminary screening of lab reports for water samples and alerts project leader

of unusual values.

2. Enters water quality data into databases and reviews databases for correctness.

3. Conducts similar tasks such as reading meteorological data or reviewing flow data.

C. Assists in preparation of formal and informal reports.

1. Proof reads reports.

2. Prepares graphs, charts, and other figures as needed.

3. Tabulates data.

4. Does statistical calculations when requested.

D. Makes preparations for field trips.

1. Maintains vehicles, and other equipment in good working order.

2. Calibrates and maintains scientific field instruments.

3. Organizes and loads field equipment into vehicle.

4. Prepares sample identification tags, sample custody forms, field books, lab analysis

forms and sample containers in advance for sampling trips.

5. Cleans and repairs equipment as needed.

E. Teamwork

Communicates accurate information to others in a professional and courteous manner. Conveys a willingness to assist. Shows consideration for others; works cooperatively with other co-workers; provides constructive feedback without undue criticism of others. Offers suggestions for the improvement of work schedules, procedures, and results. Demonstrates an eagerness to learn.

F. Skills

Necessary: Driver’s license, ability to lift 50 pounds, experience in word processing or spreadsheet programs.

Helpful: Boating, boat trailering, first aid, swimming, mechanical skills, map reading.
