Description:The Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center invites applications for 2 Temporary Conservation Ecology Hourly Worker positions. This is a 3-4 month position beginning as early as April 2008 through August-September 2008 with possible extension to year end. On-site housing is provided on a space-available basis. The Temporary Hourly Conservation Technicians will assist in all aspects of implementing an ecological forestry and wildlife monitoring program. Half of time will be spent in the field, where activities will include forest mensuration, vegetative classification, use of GPS equipment, data collection and entry, and other duties as required. In addition the technician will assist with various wildlife population surveys and management ranging from invasive species management, gopher tortoise population surveys, red-cockaded woodpecker management, quail covey call counts, White-tailed deer surveys and other avian projects. Finally the worker will be involved with GIS data entry and manipulation of current and historical land cover in ArcGIS.

The 29,000 acre Research Center is located approximately 30 miles south of Albany, Georgia. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs focus on ecology and natural resource management. The site includes 16,000 acres of longleaf pine forests, over 1,000 acres of wetlands and 26 miles of two stream and river ecosystems. For more information visit our web site: www.jonesctr.org.

Job Requirements: Ability to conduct physical activity in the field under a variety of weather conditions, to follow instructions with attention to detail, and work well within small groups. Some computer-related experience is required, and familiarity with Southeastern vegetation and plant communities is very desirable. GIS experience a plus.

Qualifications: Minimum A.S. degree (or substantial progress toward an A.S. or B.S. degree) in forestry, wildlife ecology, conservation biology, ecology, or related field.

Salary: $7.00 per hour with on-site housing provided or $9.00 per hour without housing. No benefits package is available.
