Position Summary: The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University, a top ranked national
program, is seeking a dynamic, collaborative colleague to join our award-winning faculty as a
Freshwater Fish Biologist at the Assistant Professor level. This tenure track position will either be
9-month 1.0 FTE or 12-month at .75 FTE, FTE to be allocated in consultation with the chair.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. We seek a creative individual interested
in building a research and teaching program related to ichthyology, fish ecology and conservation.
Research interests should relate to systematics, behavior, physiology, population and community
ecology, habitat restoration and/or management of native fish species. Teaching commitment is
50% and includes 2-3 undergraduate courses per year, including ichthyology (Biology of Fishes
and Fish Systematics), participation in a team-taught capstone experiences for undergraduates, and
a graduate-level course every other year.
Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in ichthyology, fish ecology, fisheries science, or closely-related natural resource discipline; have expertise in natural history, phylogenetic and/or ecological relationships and management of fishes; have a record of peer-reviewed publication and grantmanship; and experience teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with freshwater fishes and their habitats, curating vertebrate collections,
public education and outreach, communication and collaboration with natural resource managers and multiple stakeholders, and a demonstrable record of working with a diverse population.
Position Duties:
Instruction, Advising and Other Education Duties–50%
1. Annually teach three undergraduate classes, including FW 315, Biology of Fishes and FW 316, Systematics of Fishes, as well
as one of the following: FW 255, Field Sampling of Fish and Wildlife; FW 321, Fish and Wildlife Resource Ecology; FW
472, Advanced Ichthyology.
2. Participate in graduate education, including teaching of a graduate course, leading graduate seminars, special topics courses
or other educational experiences at least every other year.
3. Mentor students in Senior Group Projects.
4. Serve as academic advisor for 20-30 undergraduate majors annually.
5. Mentor graduate students and serve on graduate committee inside and outside the Department.
6 Participate in curriculum and program review and development, as well as personal professional development. Contribute to
scholarship of teaching as appropriate.
Research and Integrative Scholarship - 30%
1. Maintain an active, externally-funded research program on freshwater fish conservation and management. This may include
natural history, behavioral ecology, systematics, physiology, population ecology, community ecology, habitat relationships, or
sport and commercial harvest. The work of graduate students will be a major portion of this program, so quality mentorship
of these students is essential.
2. Collaborate with other scientists in the University, as well as with tribal, state and federal agencies, in planning and
conducting scholarly studies. Collaborate with management agencies to foster effective conservation of native freshwater
species.
3. Publish the results of original research and teaching in peer-reviewed journals, reports, and other outlets intended for peer
scientists and other natural resources professionals. Periodically publish integrated studies such as articles, book chapters, or
other documents. Validation of scholarship will mainly be through sustained publication in national, peer-reviewed scholarly
journals. Oral presentations about current research findings at regional and national conferences are essential. Publication of
instructional materials may validate creative approaches to quality teaching, both resident instructional and extended
education.
4. Participate as co-curator of vertebrate collections. This position will build upon the established and successful teaching and
research program to assess age, growth, and early life history of fishes.
Extended Education - 10%
1. Periodically communicate technical and non-technical information to natural resource professionals, extension agents,
educators, and the public – orally and in writing. Cooperate with extension specialists and other educators to support
educational programming for professionals and life-long learning for the public.
Service - 10%
1. Will assume an equitable share of governance and committee duties in the department, college, and university. Will show
initiative and cooperative spirit in carrying out obligations as a member of academia, a state employee, and member of the
human community.
