Research Intern/Associate Position Vacancy in Coupled Human & Natural Systems
We seek an energetic and thoughtful individual to advance two projects that investigate private forests as coupled human and natural systems. Project 1 explores how relationships shape economic and ecological outcomes across forested landscapes through the application of social network and spatial analyses. Project 2 investigates the effects of landholding size on landowner decision-making toward economic and ecological outcomes and considers policy and practice alternatives. Note: this position is not solely to conduct research and includes engagement in planning and delivery of outreach programs to affected communities.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. Health coverage is provided and opportunities for professional development are possible. Contingent on finalized funding, this is a 24-month full-time position beginning September 2008 with the possibility of extension. Expected duties are as follows.
* Plan and conduct interviews with resource professionals and others that collect demographic, network, and ecological resource data in the context of ecosystem service (e.g., fiber, water quality, habitat) provision from forested landscapes. Analyze these data using appropraite technqiues (e.g., social network analysis) and consistent with their spatial context.
* Plan and oversee the delivery and evaluation of an innovative extension program to aid landowner decision-making. Evaluation will rely on quantitative analysis of survey and phone interview data in the context of the Theory of Planned Behavior.
* Related to both projects, prepare manuscripts for publication in scholarly journals, communicate findings through outreach materials (e.g., publications, web sites) and programs (e.g., presentations to professionals, workshops with affected stakeholders), and contribute to proposals that extend these research directions.
Minimum Qualifications
* For hiring as research intern, MS is required. For hiring as research associate, PhD is required. At least one degree must be in forestry, natural resources, environmental studies, or related field.
* Experience in collecting and analyzing quantitative social science data (e.g., survey responses)
* Ability to work independently and as part of team
* Ability to communicate with diverse study participants, adult learners, and partners (e.g., researchers, landowners, resource professionals, policy-makers, etc.)
* Overnight travel for research and outreach is expected. A valid driver's license and clearance by the University's risk management are required.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis techniques
* Experience in collecting network data and conducting social network analysis
* Experience with planning, delivery, and evaluation of extension programs
