GRA available through the Warnell School of Forestry & Natural
Resources, University of Georgia, and the Smithsonian Institution. The
Ph.D. student will initiate research on Rusty Blackbirds in southern
coastal wetlands to investigate population dynamics and ecology during
winter. Preliminary surveys of winter roost and foraging sites were
conducted in 2006 and 2007. Will investigate site selection, foraging
behaviors, response to experimental manipulation of managed wetlands,
survival rates, and other factors influencing Rusty Blackbirds on
southeastern wintering grounds. Initial field work will begin during
late fall, ~mid-October 2008, with selected student as Technician. The
0.50 EFT Ph.D. GRA will begin in January 2009 (spring semester).

Desired Qualifications

Must be highly motivated, innovative, creative, and willing to work
long hours in adverse weather conditions at remote locations in coastal
marshes. Must be courteous, congenial, and able to gain trust and form
a strong rapport with diverse landowners and managers. Ideally, the
selected student will have a working knowledge of Rusty Blackbirds;
their habitat requirements; their capture, handling, banding; and
monitoring them with radio telemetry. Excellent writing and
quantitative skills will be expected.

Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree in biology, ecology,
wildlife sciences, or a related discipline; and a GRE (V + Q) ≥ 1200.
