Official Title: County Extension Educator, E-2, Urban Horticulture.
Working Title: Extension Assistant Professor, full-time, 12-month, tenure-track, 100%
Extension faculty position.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has countywide responsibilities, but will work on a regional basis to
enhance program delivery and quality. S/he is responsible for horticulture education
for horticulture crop producers, landscape and green industry professionals,
landowners, and volunteers. Educational programs are developed and delivered to
promote ecologically sound horticulture practices that enhance marketability of
horticulture products and services. Programs serve urban, rural and the urban/rural
interface audiences.
S/he will provide programmatic direction in horticulture to a diverse audience and
effectively collaborate with other professionals at Washington State University and
other universities, the Community Colleges of Spokane, Spokane City and County
Departments, Conservation Districts, Departments of Natural Resources and Fish and
Wildlife, youth and family organizations, and professional organizations.
In addition, s/he will contribute to university, local, state, and national recognition of
WSU Extension as an essential educational and applied research resource; contribute
to the recognition of WSU as a premier Land-Grant University; and contribute to the
Extension profession.
The incumbent will become knowledgeable about and promote the entire Extension
program. S/He will be an advocate for WSU and Extension in the community and
contribute to an accurate, consistent, and positive message about WSU Extension to
funding partners, participants, and the wider community.

Primary Responsibilities:
May include any or all of the following:
• Provide leadership, expertise and programming that addresses the needs of the
horticulture industry and a diverse audience of private landowners in Spokane
County. Audiences include the green industry, small acreage landowners,
environmentalists, professional groups, and other individuals interested in
farming, gardening and landscaping topics in Spokane County.
• Provide leadership and education, in a train-the-trainer model, for program
support staff and volunteers in the Spokane County Master Gardener Program.
• Work effectively with other Extension colleagues to engage the resources of WSU
to support programs.

• Work effectively with agencies and educational institutions outside WSU to enhance and support local
programming and projects.
• Develop classes, publications and web-based materials that will address the educational needs of producers,
green industry professionals, home gardeners and volunteers.
• Secure funding related to position assignment that may include contracts, partnerships, cooperative funding,
and gifts.
• Develop and share scholarly products appropriate for an Extension Urban Horticulturist.
Line of Responsibility:
This WSU faculty member is responsible to the WSU Spokane County Extension Director.
Relationships:
• Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team at WSU Spokane County Extension.
• Supervise two part-time extension professionals and occasional grant funded employees. One of the part-time
professionals works with small acreage landowners. The other part-time professional manages over 100 WSU
Spokane County Extension Master Gardener volunteers. WSU Spokane County Extension Master Gardeners
operate plant clinics, provide plant science education in schools, teach public horticulture seminars and
workshops, give instruction in environmental stewardship, deliver horticulture therapy to the elderly and help
families grow their own nutritious food. The WSU Spokane County Extension Master Gardener Program

• Work with WSU Spokane Interdisciplinary Design Institute and the Horticulture and Landscape Architecture
Department, the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program Leader, as well as other WSU Extension educators
and specialists. Partner with University of Idaho Extension Educators in adjacent counties as appropriate.
• Partner and collaborate with local stakeholders for program development, implementation, and evaluation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree (at time of application) with at least one college degree in horticulture, environmental science, plant
science, or related discipline.
HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Evidence of ability to foster teamwork among multi-disciplinary professional colleagues, staff members, and
volunteers.
• Experience in working collaboratively with university, community, environmental and horticultural
organizations, and green industry trade associations.
• Evidence of ability to develop programs that empower participants and build local capacity.
• Evidence of ability to communicate effectively with constituency groups using adult education, information
technology, and computer skills (word processing, email, multimedia presentations, web-based tools).
• Experience in providing leadership to staff/volunteers to enhance their management/educational delivery
capabilities.
• Evidence of ability to set goals, prioritize efforts, and disengage from a project once constituent capacity
building has taken place.
• Evidence of current knowledge of urban horticulture issues.

• Evidence of success in planning, implementing, and evaluating an Extension or outreach program to one or

LOCATION:
This position is located at the WSU Spokane County Extension office, 222 North Havana, Spokane, WA. Spokane
County is the home of 447,000 residents. The City of Spokane is the second largest city in Washington with 197,000
residents and the City of Spokane Valley is the 7th largest city. Spokane County is located in the heart of the Inland
Northwest, and serves as a regional hub for higher education, medical, shopping, and entertainment. Spokane
County is also the regional hub for horticulture and landscape. The Green Bluff area is a significant fruit, flower, and
vegetable direct marketing area with significant ties to the local economy. Community Gardens are a growing
interest. The area is an outdoors-lover's paradise, with nearby downhill and cross-country skiing, white-water rafting,
golf, numerous lakes, and the Centennial Trail. The Spokane River runs through downtown Spokane, and the Finch
Arboretum, Riverfront Park, and Manito Park are among the many parks within the city limits (more information at
http://experiencespokane.com/parks). Spokane also is home to the Spokane Symphony, Bing Crosby Theater, art
museums, historic buildings, a new convention center, and an international airport. Fairchild Air Force Base is located
within Spokane County. WSU Spokane is a growing urban campus that includes faculty in horticulture and landscape
architecture. Eastern Washington University, which shares the Spokane campus with WSU, has an urban planning
program, and the community colleges of Spokane offer a number of horticulture and agriculture related courses. The
median household income in Spokane County in 2005 was $41,667. The median house value in 2005 was $147,000.
Races in Spokane County, Washington include: White Non-Hispanic (89.8%); Hispanic (2.8%); American Indian
(2.4%); and Black (1.6%). There is also a vibrant Slavic community within Spokane County.
WSU Spokane County Extension receives its primary funding through Spokane County, Washington State (via
funding to Washington State University) and the United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative Research,
Education and Extension Service. In addition, WSU Spokane County Extension relies on funds from many granting
partnerships to achieve our mission.
