Basic Information:

Chattahoochee River NRA is located within the metro Atlanta four counties of Forsyth, Gwinnett, Fulton and Cobb. The duty station for this position is located at park headquarters in the main operations building, resource protection division.

The purpose of the temporary position is to perform tasks in identifying and marking the park boundary, working from existing maps and previous survey markers. The incumbent will perform routine mapping tasks to complete portions of cartographic projects, sometimes working with a professional surveyor. Other tasks include documenting encroachments onto Federal land by adjacent property owners, assisting park staff in correcting those encroachments, identifying trail systems with GPS equipment, and assist in producing and installing trail maps with the data collected. Assignments typically constitute a portion of a broader project.

The incumbent should have a strong working knowledge and interest in surveying methods and techniques, park resources, and commitment to a team-oriented working environment.

Work will be both active and sedentary in nature. The work is performed primarily outdoors in varied climatic and terrain conditions. Prolonged standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing, and reaching are required to perform routine tasks and move equipment and supplies. Requires sufficient physical stamina to hike while carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The work includes periods of sitting in front of computer terminals in an office setting.

Field work can be in remote areas under conditions of high heat and humidity. Hazards can be encountered in dealing with rugged terrain, transportation methods, river environment, weather, poison ivy, insects, and park wildlife including snakes.

The work schedule for this position is weekdays with the possibility of a compressed work schedule of four ten-hour days per week.

Wearing of the National Park Service uniform and operation of motor vehicles is required.

Housing may be available for rent on site in a dormitory setting.


Major Duties:

Visits field sites to gather information after explicit instructions from the supervisor, and using accepted field mapping techniques (e.g., GPS, total stations, tape and compass). Seeks assistance for unusual situations.

Verifies and/or establishes data site locations through on-site inspections; may carry out literature searches for the purpose of gathering information for data theme development or verification of data accuracy.

Marks the park boundary affixing markers to trees, installing fixed posts, and pouring concrete with brass markers.

Inputs spatial and non-spatial digital, data to draft format, field compilation, or GIS and performs necessary and proper verification and checking procedures to ensure the resultant database is as free as possible from error. Seeks assistance for situations not covered by instructions or guidelines.

Plots data to meet users' requirements for various kinds of displays. Also makes plots to check and verify the results of map file construction. Follows established guidelines and instructions to selects plot contents, appropriate scales, suitable colors, shading patterns, line types, fonts and text, and line thickness. Plots legends as instructed. Refers situations not covered by guidelines to the supervisor for resolution.

Prepares and maintains digital and hard copy versions of data histories (metadata) and data dictionaries that explain and document the nature, contents, and evaluation of information source of the GIS data base, CAD system, and GPS files.

Operates, updates, and assists in maintaining CAD/GIS software, hardware, and associated peripheral devices. Assists in maintaining GPS equipment and peripherals.

Maintains GIS files and related databases. Performs backups, purges unnecessary files, and ensures all files are organized and properly distributed for effective and efficient protection, access, and use. Edits components of GIS database to correct errors or modify, delete or add information.

Operations necessitate application of diverse software and multiple source documents for data. The incumbent uses ingenuity, attention to detail, and experience to deal with situations and work assignments. Decisions regarding what needs to be done involve various choices requiring the incumbent to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations.


Knowledge/ Skill Required by the Position:

Basic knowledge of the methods, procedures, and technology of surveying, cartographic production, GPS, and GIS.

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of GIS, GPS, and field equipment (altimeters, total station, or field survey) including scanners, plotters, and digitizers.

Knowledge of the operation and use of field data collection tools (e.g., Trimble hand-held GPS unit, CAD, total survey station equipment, tape and compass), standard field mapping techniques, and recording systems.

Basic knowledge of the DOS and Microsoft Windows-based operating systems.

Knowledge of database management and drawing file management and CAD/GIS hardware and software (e.g., ArcGIS - ArcMap/ArcCatalogue/ArcToolbox, Autocad, Microsoft Office, Word, Access, Excel, etc.).

Skill in reading and interpreting data from maps, field notes, and other sources for integration into GIS.

Ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner, including effectively portraying data for use by others.
