Qualifications: Some experience with horticulture (particularly native plant propagation) or forestry is a major plus. Working knowledge of native plants and other natural history or willingness to learn is a must. Good people skills are also important. The steward will head up ecological restoration of a 70-acre clear cut, conduct tours for those interested in burial and supervise “green” grave excavation and restoration. Will also keep records including providing paperwork and for those choosing purchase, and those visiting. Some supervision of volunteers will be involved. Also possible is developing a native plant nursery. The job will entail keeping an online naturalist blog, posting photographs on the web-site and limited public speaking. Will need to serve as the on the ground liaison with the monastic community (this is gender neutral). For those with the requisite training, the steward will also help to advise the Trappist monastery on a transition to more ecological timber-land management for over 2,000 additional acres now in industrial timber production
Salary/compensation: Negotiable and depending on qualifications, hours worked, etc, up to 30K with benefits for first year not including incentive bonuses. Some meals are provided at the monastery cafeteria if desired. Also possibility for advancement within the company (MEI).
