The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society
The College of Forestry at Oregon State University is undergoing a reorganization that will consolidate three of its departments into two. One of the new units being created is Forest Ecosystems and Society. This department brings together biological and social scientists to understand forest ecosystems, social systems, and the interactions between them, and to develop integrative approaches to sustaining forests and the services they provide. The department is committed to helping solve natural resource problems at local, regional and global scales, and promoting creative and collaborative approaches to teaching, research and extended education. We strive to ensure equal access, inclusion, and integration of people from all backgrounds into the academic culture of our department, college and university.
This new department includes 33 professorial faculty and instructors, 64 support faculty and staff, 73 graduate students, 350 undergraduates in 3 degree programs, and an annual budget exceeding $12 million. Teaching, research, and extended education programs in the department include forest ecology, genetics and genomics; forest social science, policy, and economics; natural resources, global change biology, forestry-wildlife interactions, recreation resource management, and tourism and outdoor leadership. Faculty in the department have leadership roles in several major collaborative research efforts including the H. J. Andrews Long Term Ecological Research Program, AmeriFlux, Center for Advanced Forestry Systems, and four regional research cooperatives. The department has close collaborative relationships with the nearby USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, and USGS and EPA research laboratories.
