Description:DESCRIPTION
This position will serve as project lead on a Florida aquatic gaps
project. As project lead, this position will assist in coordinating
multiple facets of this project and will be responsible for unifying the
various GIS data sets.

Review scientific literature to obtain information on the life history,
population ecology, habitat requirements, dispersal capabilities, and
genetics of fish and wildlife species. Use GIS data layers and GIS
modeling techniques to create spatially accurate habitat distribution
maps for fish and wildlife species based on species habitat
requirements. Perform GIS analyses necessary to identify terrestrial,
wetland, and aquatic habitats important to the long-term conservation of
fish and wildlife resources taking into consideration species habitat
requirements, population viability, and principles of optimum preserve
design.

Obtain information on the known occurrences of rare and endangered
species of fish and wildlife from existing sources, and convert the
information into a format suitable for use in a GIS. Obtain ancillary
GIS data layers, such as land cover, political boundaries, public land
boundaries, soils, land ownership, roads, hydrology, land use, etc.,
from outside sources and enter into the FWC GIS. Digitize new data
layers as necessary.

Prepare reports and scientific manuscripts for publication. Tasks
include writing drafts and final versions of the text, preparing figures
and tables as needed, working with layout professionals for final
printing.

Provide technical assistance to Commission biologists, other agencies,
and the public in the form of digital data and/or hardcopy maps of GIS
data layers.

Qualifications: Desired Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the biological sciences and two years of professional biological experience; or Doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the biological sciences; AND At least an intermediate level of understanding of GIS theory, principles, and practices and a working knowledge of Arc View 3.x and/or ArcGIS Knowledge, Skill and Abilities * Knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife and fisheries biology, statistical analysis, natural resource management, GIS, cartography, and digital remote sensing. * Knowledge of spatial and relational database design and implementation. * Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word. * Knowledge of GIS software including Arc View 3.x and ArcGIS 9.x * Knowledge of graphics software. * Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences. * Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data. * Ability to conduct biological research studies or analyses using scientific methods and techniques. * Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. * Ability to communicate effectively. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. * Ability to work independently. * Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques. * Ability to process information (compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, verifying or processing information or data). * Good technical writing skills.
