Description:Description of Work
Position is responsible for managing forest resources on Game Lands in
the Wildlife District 5 area of North Carolina. Activities include
control burning; preparing forest prescriptions for wildlife habitat
improvement and forest health; planning, marking, and administration
of forest product sales; and preparing annual and long range Forestry/
Wildlife Management plans. Wildlife/Forestry technical guidance to
government agencies and private landowners. Part-time supervision of
Wildlife Management crews to accomplish activities. Ability to collect
scientific data and participate in various wildlife surveys. Work is
performed under the general suprvision of a Wildlife Biologist
Supervisor II and may include related duties as required. *Unless or
until registered as a North Carolina Registered Forester, this
position will be assigned the working title of "Wildlife Forester
Manager."

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Extensive knowledge of Forest Management practices and their effects on wildlife. A thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife management. Knowledge of land and forest management and agricultural practices. Wildlife and plant ID skills. Good communication and leadership skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Organizational skills and advanced knowledge of personal computers. Operation of GPS units and GIS software. Ability to use a wide variety of equipment. Ability to capture and handle wildlife. Ability to budget time and to work equally well independently or as a team. Requires employee work schedule planning, setting work area priorities, knowledge of agency purchasing procedures, intra and inter agency coordination, training of employees, and personnel management skills. Physical ability to work in rugged terrain and in a variety of weather conditions. Training and Experience Requirements Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Forestry supplemented by 16 hours of coursework in Wildlife Management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. *Management prefers a B.S. degree in Forestry supplemented by 16 hours of coursework in Wildlife Biology/Management and three years of applicable experience (at least one of which is Wildlife Management related) or a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Biology/Management supplemented by 16 hours of couresework in Forest Management and three years of applicable experience (at least one of which is Forestry related); or an equivalent combination of Wildlife/Forestry education and Forest and/or Wildlife Management experience. Applicant must have NC Prescribed Burner certification or achieve this certification within 12 months after employment. *No telephone interviews will be granted.
