This position is located in the Northern Research Station's (NRS) Research Work Unit (RWU) FS-NRS-06, "Climate, Fire, and Carbon Cycle Sciences", at the Silas Little Experimental Forest near New Lisbon, NJ. The research mission of the RWU is to develop and provide the basic science, quantitative methods, and technology needed to make decisions about forest ecosystems and the atmosphere related to climate change, fire, and carbon. The incumbent serves as a research assistant to one or more of the RWU's research scientists who are conducting research on the basic physical and chemical processes that govern fire behavior, fire danger, and fire emissions; developing new predictive fire-fuel-atmosphere interaction tools and models that can be incorporated into the next generation physics-based fire modeling and global fire danger assessment systems; conducting research on forest carbon, water, and energy exchanges in response to climate variability, management, and disturbances; and conducting research on how forest productivity and sustainability will change under changing climatic and air pollution conditions.
The incumbent works closely with scientists at the Silas Little Experimental Forest to perform vegetation sampling; weather, air quality, and soil instrument maintenance and calibration; soil respiration measurements; and to carry out analyses of observational data collected at the Silas Little Experimental Forest.

Qualifications: Applicants should have knowledge on how to operate, maintain, and calibrate field instrumentation for measuring soil, vegetation, and atmospheric variables (e.g. meteorological stations and towers, soil respiration, ozone and particulate matter sampling, biometric and vegetation sampling). The successful candidates will have strong organizational and communication skills, have the ability to take direction, work as part of a team, have the capability to work with minimal supervision, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
