Description:Background:
This position is part of Western Timberland's 210,000 acre Millicoma Tree Farm located near Coos Bay, Oregon and reports to the Area Team Leader. Approximately 75% of work time is spent in the field, much of that on steep or uneven terrain covered with slash and brush. Field work must be done under a variety of weather conditions including rain and snow. Operations are highly weather dependent and sometimes must be carried out under irregular working hours sometimes including weekends. The position involves driving woods vehicles on rough off highway roads-approximately 25,000 miles per year.
Key Functions:
The efficient growing of commercial forests for harvest in an environmentally, economically sound and safe manner is the essence of this role. The steps involved include: site preparation, planting, land exams, vegetation control, stocking control, commercial thinning, fertilization, fire protection and involvement in other related fields. The forester will work as part of the Coos Bay Operations team to accomplish the overall forestry goals across the ownership at Coos Bay. Key responsibilities include: prescription development to apply Western Timberlands Silviculture Standards, layout of project work using aerial photos, planimetric maps and GIS systems, on-the-ground layout of plans, preparation and negotiation of project bid packages and contracts, performing on-the-ground field inspection of work, evaluating work and making payments, developing and tracking against budgets, keeping detailed records, and using computers and GIS systems for planning, tracking, and forest inventory. Fire preparedness, fire fighting, and other protection functions as required. The forester will manage a variety of methods of pesticide applications as one tool to achieve vegetation control. Candidate must model safe practices at all times. Candidate is expected to set Weyerhaeuser and Coos Bay area safety expectations with contractors and employees, and inspect and evaluate safety practices and performance of contractor activities.

Qualifications: Qualifications Prefer BS degree in Forest Management or a closely related field (e.g., Forestry, Engineering, Natural Resources, etc.) but would consider a person with multiple years of field experience in lieu of a degree. Minimum of 1 year in operational forestry. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated supervisory/management potential. Strong team building skills. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with proficiency in use of personal computers and associated software using spreadsheets. Stereoscopic photo interpretation and photogrammetry skills using color aerial photography and ortho photography. Demonstrated woods skills in mapping, compass use, forest soils, dendrology, entomology, pathology, forest statistics and mensuration and forest economics. Ability to prepare, permit, negotiate, administer, and monitor contracts. Ability to develop, prioritize,plan, implement and manage activities to meet targets/deadlines. Familiar with the Oregon Forest Practices Act, herbicide applications, and fire regulations.
