Whitetail Deer Field Assistant

Description:Two field assistants are needed to assist with trapping, radio-marking, and radio-tracking of white-tailed deer in north-central Louisiana. The assistant also will aid the graduate student in maintaining bait sites, data entry, spatially referencing various data points using GPS units, and help maintain a growing database of telemetry locations derived from each day s work.

PROJECT HISTORY:
This past spring and summer 35 white-tailed deer where captured using a drop net system. Of those, 27 were radio collared and are now being located 3 times a week using triangulation. The study site is nearly 10K acres of privately owned pine forest owned by one primary landowner but leased to two different hunting clubs that participate in some level of Quality Deer Management. The primary objectives for this project include quantifying home ranges, assessing survival, and estimating harvest rates for the area.

Qualifications: Be enrolled in or graduated from an accredited natural resource program or have relevant field-related experience. The successful candidate will work closely with many persons from state agencies, private conservation groups, private landowners, and sportsmen. Applicants should be able to endure long working days, lift 50 lbs, and be willing to live at a remote field station with minimal supervision during 4-5 day periods. Must also be tolerant of high heat, humidity, a variety of biting insects, and venomous snakes. Persons with exceptional inter-personal skills and an ability to effectively interact with a diversity of people, particularly sportsmen, are preferred. Telemetry will be conducted on private hunting leases and assistant must be tolerant of hunting and be able to interact with local hunters/clubs. Previous experience using radio-telemetry and operating ATVs is desired and recommended. A valid driver's license accompanying a clean driving record is also required.
