Description:The person hired into this position will be responsible for managing databases that are used or developed within the Stock Assessment group. This will include development of databases, input of information, and ability to query and output necessary data in a number of different output formats. Basic statistical analysis skills are expected, with advanced analyses performed under the guidance of stock assessment group members. This includes writing computer programs in SAS, R, Access, Excel VBA, and others languages to extract, manipulate, and analyze data. Responsibilities will also include the development and maintenance of a collection of electronic scientific documents within a computer database framework and the creation of stock assessment summary tables and figures needed to communicate assessment results.

Examples of Work:
Extracts trip-ticket, TIPS biostatistics, and other fisheries information from the databases maintained by the Fisheries Dependent Monitoring group.
Develops and maintains a document bibliography for stock assessment group use, including life history studies, assessment documents, and population dynamic modeling research.
Program and run generalized linear models used to estimate standardized temporal trends from observations of relative abundance.

Location: SAINT PETERSBURG

Qualifications: A bachelor's degree with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics, including applied statistics and two years of related professional experience; or a more advanced degree and no professional experience. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: database software and database management techniques, computer programming, and basic statistical analysis. Electronic reference collection management would be a plus. Ability to: run computer programs that manipulate and organize databases to query these databases and summarize results; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships. Skill in: the use of programming languages; the use of personal computers; and in the use of word processing and spreadsheet and database software
